Grow a Pair, Dems

Jessica Acee • Jun 18, 2010

The problem with America today is not the radical right but the Democratic Party. That is one thing that became abundantly clear to me as I watched Chris Matthews’ new documentary “Rise of the New Right”.

Back in March President Obama went on the Today Show with Matt Lauer to pander to the radical right. “And I think those are folks who have legitimate concerns. And my hope is that as we move forward and we’re tackling things like the deficit, imposing a freeze on domestic spending, taking steps that show we are sincere about dealing with our long-term problems, that some of that group will dissipate,” said Obama.

Spitting at Black congressmen is a totally unacceptable way to express frustration with the economy. And the folks packing guns at Obama events or carrying racist signs with pictures of him in black face will not just give up their visceral hatred of him as soon as the Democrats start to deal with “our long term problems.”

One such problem is our current, grossly inefficient, expensive and ineffective healthcare system. Yet when talk began to revise how healthcare happens in America, it was only a matter of minutes before the spokespeople from the radical right started drumming up fear and hatred.

Last fall rumors started spreading that the Democrats health care proposals would create government-sponsored “death panels” to decide which patients were worthy of living. When the right invested millions in spreading this lie, the Democrats responded by rolling over and took out all wording related to end of life counseling from the bill.

Instead of pandering to the radical right, Obama needs to call them what they are – unacceptable. Then Obama and the Democrats need to stand up for themselves, grow a pair, and start acting like they control the House, the Senate, and the Presidency. Because last time I checked, they do.
