The Dream Generation

Glenn Hutchinson • Dec 16, 2010

Have you met the next generation?  They are dreamers.

Young people all around the country are organizing and participating in democracy.

They are young.  They are political.  And many are undocumented.

When they were kids, their parents brought them to the United States.  They grow up in our communities, graduate from our high schools, and are American in every way — except they lack documentation.

Because of a decision that their parents made, they aren’t citizens.  But in the way they participate in democracy, they are what any civics textbook would say are model citizens.

They’ve walked from Miami to Washington D.C. to tell their stories and work for change.  They’ve gone on hunger strikes in North Carolina, California, and Texas to get Senators to listen.

And now as Congress decides their future, they are online and watch CSPAN as they study for final exams.  They tweet reactions to the debate on the Dream Act.  They organize through Facebook and phone Congress to express their opinion.

Most importantly, they have learned the most important lesson of being an American: believing in your dreams.

Gaby wants to teach autistic children.  Carlos dreams of being an architect.  Angelica will be a counselor.

Maybe us older folks should ask ourselves, what happens to dreams? Thirty years later, baby boomers still mourn losing their dreamer, John Lennon. Fifteen years later, my generation X are the non-dreamers, complacently inching toward middle age.

But this new generation, they are the dreamers of tomorrow.

The ones who just might preserve the American dream.
