Submit Inspirational Stories of Campus Action to Imagine 2050!

Catharine Debelle • Jun 02, 2011

In the midst of the most draconian anti-immigrant legislation introduced in the US since the Immigration Act of 1924, opposing forces are seeking to determine the outcome of these divisive legislative battles. Meanwhile, people’s lives are on the line.

Students are on the frontlines of the debate around what it will mean to be American for the next several decades. Groups like Youth for Western Civilization, backed by the Leadership Institute, are taking this debate seriously.  Their motto, “defending the west on campus,” is indicative of their trajectory. But student groups and individuals across the country are determined to have the conversation in a different way – how do we build a community where justice might be possible?

This summer, Imagine 2050 will highlight the work of campus leaders who are undercutting nativism on college campuses and creating political space for such questions to be asked.

Campus leaders across the nation have always found ways to confront bigotry and unite students to fight for community and democracy.  We recognize that students are on the frontlines of this debate. Now it is time to hear them.

Imagine2050.net will highlight stories of campus resistance to nativism in order to provide an opportunity for campus leaders to share methods, tactics and strategies for restoring justice.

From June-August, students can submit stories/campaigns to Imagine2050.net.  The stories will be published on Imagine2050.net. A selection will be featured on Imagine2050.net’s “frontlines” page.

Here are a few things Imagine2050.net will be looking for in a narrative:

  • addresses the Tanton Network and Youth for Western Civilization on campus
  • brings campus leaders into the community to resist nativism
  • incorporates creative tactics
  • includes an evaluation
  • tailored to specific events, historical dates or are timely
  • reminds us that this challenge should be inclusive, creative and fun!

We have highlighted campus resistance to nativism on Imagine2050.net already.  There were so many groups and individuals across the country that spoke out against Youth for Western Civilization and affiliates of the Tanton Network. They continue to be models of campus resistance. Let’s make the stories available to the next generation of freedom fighters.

You can submit your contribution here.
